The Modest Cowboy sound is a surprise. The best description was delivered by lead vocalist Brooke Palmer during a radio interview when he described the sound as the “love child resulting from a union of Buck Owens and David Gilmour”. Country and Western meets Pink Floyd. The sound and content is thoughtful, atmospheric and broody – with a mildly hypnotic groove best listened to as part of a long, lonesome drive on a foggy night.
The Modest Cowboys themselves are late bloomers. Three of the five full-time members, Gary Martin (bass), David Friend (guitar), and Doug Poad (guitar) are neighbours who live in the Beach area of Toronto within doors of each other. The band was formed in 2005 when music veteran Gary Martin dragged both David & Doug from their basements, and then went on to conscript former workmate Chris Ferguson (drums), and lifelong friend and former band mate Brooke Palmer to the project.
The sound is at its most complete when the band is joined on stage by Gary’s father, Ben Martin, who puts the cowboy into the Modest Cowboys with the vintage and haunting sound of pedal steel.
The motivation for the band is the search for self expression – with an age range in the group that stretches from the early thirties to the mid-seventies – there’s a wealth of collective experience to draw upon, with the song writing taking on a spiritual, thoughtful and interpretive tone.

Modest Cowboys sound cannot be easily categorized.
Neither alt-country, nor indie rock their music is perhaps best described as "Broody" placing a strong emphasis on songwriting and lyrics while connecting spaces for experimentation.
Influenced by a wide range of music, from Rock, Country and Folk they continue their genre bending approach, rejuvenating style from the past.
Like their music, it presents itself as a feeling. Something familar yet you heard it for the first time.
